School Tour 3rd and 4th Class
Our first stop was The Mitchelstown Caves. A man named Michael Condon was quarrying for limestone. He dropped his crowbar and when he went to get it he realised that underneath the ground was hollow. He had discovered The Mitchelstown Caves .The Shelley brothers and Michael Condon first explored the caves with candles. The candles went out and they were stuck there for twelve hours. After that people put down concrete steps and put in lights. . Nathan found it so interesting to hear how old everything was. We had to go down eighty eight steps to get to the bottom which was sixty meters from the surface. It was really cool when the lights went off. Some people found this scary. It was interesting to hear that they hold concerts in the widest cavern. We all sang the national anthem down there. The tour guide flashed her torch on the walls and you could see fossils, pictures of animals and stalactites and stalagmites. There is also an earthquake reader in the caves where scientists can detect earthquakes around the world.
Air-Tastic was enjoyed by everyone. Séamus enjoyed the reflex speed game where you had to jump up and hit each dial to get a score. The battering ram game was great fun where you hat to knock your opponent into the foam pit with a green battering ram. It was hard to get out of the pit when you fell in. Aodh enjoyed the volleyball target game. James loved Beat the Wall where you had to run up the wall and slide down. Olaf enjoyed the obstacle course. We all had lots of fun there.
Our last stop was Corrin Woods. We climbed up to the top and stopped along the way to read The Stations of the Cross. There was a big cross at the very top. The view was really cool at the top. We said prayers and put stones on the mound. These stones represented our worries.
We got back to school at 4.30. We had a wonderful day.
